Banh "Ped" Phommavong quietly closed his Ped's Lemon Grass Asian Grills in Lakeway and on West Sixth Street and apparently left town with no explanation or advance notice, according to a former landlord who says he is owed back rent.
I’m a mom. I drive a station wagon. I’m typically in bed by 9:30 p.m. Exciting stuff, but calm down… the story gets better. Recently, a fabulous opportunity to dine and review a Vietnamese/Thai restaurant on Sixth Street came knocking on my door.
Mekong River blends classic Vietnamese cuisine with some Thai favorites and the result is almost always delightful. The Pho soup is always a great place to start. I like the Pho Tom which begins with a hearty beef stock and a wonderfully tasting broth. Add shrimp, bean sprouts, green chili peppers, coriander, and mint leaves along with rice noodles and you have a very compelling dish for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
It all began in 1983, with a hefty pot of beef shin bones boiling away in San Jose, California, kitchen. Within hours, the bones yielded a deep amber broth that was layered with fresh rice noodles and selected cuts of beef, then garnished with cilantro, rounds of bright green scallion, and shaved red onion.
There are times when I get a craving for Thai and Vietnamese food that is so acute it is almost palpable. In situations like that, and they occur frequently, I head to Non La in Lakeway just off 620.
